Marriott

Paris Marriott Opera Ambassador Hotel

Courtyard by Marriott Amsterdam Arena Atlas

Renaissance Amsterdam Hotel

D3 Cityrambler

12/15 Rain in the morning but the sun smiles the other time
Amsterdam, ParisAmsterdam

Slept on the boat was kind of an unique experience. I had twin beds, a sink and a  closet in my room, but the whole space was just half of my room in le Galion. The wall between the rooms are made of woods, you can hear someone snoring in the midnight or some erotical scream. All in all, I am not regret to sleep on the boat, open your eyes and you can see the sea immediately, feeling the chilly sea wind or talking to the captain, Roy, a guy with whole arms of tattoo.

nEO_IMG_PC153261 Vita-Nova

I decided to ramble in the city by myself today. Amsterdam is a small city, can walk to anywhere in 30 minutes. While I walked on the streets, I felt like to be noticed by others very often.

  1. An Asian guy alone in the red-light district
  2. With a good camera swinging on the neck
  3. Wore an improper snow boots without any snow
  4. Speaking fluent English but small volumn
  5. Walking on the bike way very often which is not recommended

I didn’t care too much about how others see me. Because in Amsterdam, you have the right to be yourself, do whatever you want. This is a city with least peer pressure and nobody care about your label. If I were a kid, living in an environment like this will be good.

nEO_IMG_PC153270 Boats and canals are everywhere in the city

Is Amsterdam a place for weirdos? Nope, but this is a combination of many different styles of people, incrediblely, they live together in harmony. I witness a group of white collar had an serious meeting right in the street next to the red-lighted zone. The coffeeshop serves marijuana opens beside to family Christmas decoration store.

nEO_IMG_PC153293 A collection of book covers

I felt like to ramble on the streets, sometimes the bicycle riders would shout at me coz I stood in their way, reading a map or taking pictures. But basically residents in the city were friendly to visitors. I asked a hot blonde for direction and she answered me with big smile and willing to tell me where it was, it would never happen in France, you bet. (‘Cause girls would rather speak French)

nEO_IMG_PC153296 Sunshine through the trees

And there are also something funny around the city. For example, I found a car plate with 53-GG-TV, I couldn’t help it but took this shot. GGTV? Gossip-Girl-TV?

nEO_IMG_PC153304 GGTV

nEO_IMG_PC153305 Freakingly long

And I think Dutch is similiar to German since sometimes they pronounce the same or use the same way to spell words. Like this brand, DOVENONTMOETINGSCENTRUM, which is FREAKINGLY LONG. It is a torture for Asian people to distinguish what the word consist of. Please try to speak “Ik voel me graag ei en ham hebben voor het ontbijt.”

And I went to Heineken museum. It cost me 15 euros to enter a museum, thankfully there were almost nobody in the building, the numbers of crew member were even more than visitors. I spent 2 hours slowly walked through the whole museum, and realize the power of marketing can be that significant. The fee of ticket included 2 beers at the bar, so kind of worth it i guess.

The Heinekens tried hard to avoid talking about how rich of the family were, the founder asked his mother to buy a brewery. If I were rich and my parents could buy me a brewery, I would be much more richer.

nEO_IMG_PC153320 Heineken is your good buddy

nEO_IMG_PC153330 4 ingredients to make beers

nEO_IMG_PC153354 The longest soccer table!!

I have to admit, Heineken was my least favorite beer coz its bitterness. I would never order Heineken if I didn’t have other options. But I’d like to work in the company because I saw every employees smile from inside when they’re working.

nEO_IMG_PC153367 Bicycles and canal, stereotype of Amsterdam

I tried to find free toilets on the street, but unfortunately, they got free wifi instead of free toilet, you have to pay to pee. It is non-sense for Asians to pay for toilets. If someone asked me to pay, I’d just pee in the canal, and that’s many guys do, find a quite place, unzip the jeans and enjoy the moment.

nEO_IMG_PC153378 Tulip shops

nEO_IMG_PC153394 nEO_IMG_PC153386 Bean soup

I finally tried the traditional Dutch bean soup and it was tasty!! The beans melting in the meat soup and the flavors mixed together, hot but enjoyable. I’ve found a passage of describing the soup.

Winter can be pretty unforgiving here in Holland. It's not uncommon for me to get soaked to the bone while I’m out running errands on my bike. So, knowing that I will be rewarded with a hearty meal of a soup makes it a bit more bearable. The easiest way to become acquainted with Dutch food is making and enjoying my brown bean soup. It will wrap you up like a warm blanket on a cold day.

And there’s the end of my Amsterdam tour. I spent extra 3 more days here and totally worth it. To see everything in the city, 3 days are not enough but that’s OK for me. I’d suggest people who interested in visiting museums to buy a museum card for 19E and visiting almost all the museums in the city, but not included Anne Frank Huis or sex museum or Heineken experience.

I am in Paris right now and plan to visit Rome tomorrow. Have to catch the early bus to airport. See you, goodnight!

D2 Unexpected friend, Catherine

Amsterdam 12/14 Sunny
Amsterdam

I had prepared nothing for Amsterdam, the reason I came here was that people recommend this place to see and visit so that I changed my plan, spent 2 more days in Ams. The host of hotel, Roy gave me a city map and instructed me the major sights in the city, since it is not a huge city, every sights are close to each other, walking or bicycling-riding are the best ways to explore.

nEO_IMG_PC142940 Catherine

My plan was visit at least Anne Frank Huis, the Heineken museum and the Van Gogh museum. So that in the first morning, I walked about 30 minutes to the Heineken museum in the morning, 10am. It was not yet opened so that I turned to the Van Gogh museum.

I was excited to see the famous “I amsterdam” sign stood on the plaza of Rijksmuseum. So that I asked a random girl to take photos for me. That’s the chance I met Catherine from Greece.

nEO_IMG_PC142903 I amsterdam

Catherine was in Amsterdam with her friends, but they visited Rijksmuseum and she had been there before, so that she’s walking alone. I asked her to take a photo for me with the big sign and unexpectedly she asked me to take one for her, WITH MY CAMERA. Then she gave me her mail address and ask me send that photo to her. I said yes and then heading for the Van Gogh museum. 3 minutes later she ran into me and asked my plan of the day. I’ve got no plan but wanted to visit at least the 3 sights I mentioned before. She asked me if she could accompanied with me coz she’s separated with her friends.

nEO_IMG_PC142917 Catherine and me outside of Van Gogh museum

She told me that she also had been to the Van Gogh museum, but she could wait for me. It’s kind of interesting, I think my camera has its own charm. As a lonely traveller, accompanied with a young girl was unexpected reward. I said yes and let her wait for me for 1 hour. Then turned into the museum.

Van Gogh museum displays tons of paintings of the prestigious painter Van Gogh. The museum make the paintings chronically, we can observe the improvement of Van Gogh in different periods. I was astonished by the paintings, the emotion were fiercely protrayed by observing the color and brushwork on the canvas. I bet Van Gogh was looked like a weirdo at the time but he made so many masterpieces, so don’t despise your weirdo friends.

My favorite painting was not-that-famous, The pink peach tree (De rozeperzik boom), Van Gogh coloered the sky with think light blue, just fit the color of sky in my dream world. I’d drown in the happiness blue color.

(Van Gogh)

Catherine caught me after the museum, she asked me where to go next, she’d like to visit the windmill and Anne Frank Huis. We plan the route together and decide to visit the windmill firstm then the Anne Frank Huis. She did some homework about Ams and the windmill village, which completed my journey. I never think of visiting the windmill village before.

nEO_IMG_PC143025 The canal and the windmills

nEO_IMG_PC143034 Me and Catherine

After the lunch break, we knew each other more and more. She’s from Greece, visiting a northern city of the Netherlands for a seminar, the association paid her 70% back of her travel expenditure. So that her friend and she visit Amsterdam for 3 days. She’s the youngest child in her family, two sisters above, from the largest island of Greece. She’s 18 years old, studys European national affairs or something in Athens. That’s her basic information.

On our way to the windmill, she always asked me to take pictures for her, even in the wheats, on the trees or in an anonymous street with canal. I was sure that she liked my camera very much ;)

nEO_IMG_PC142941 As if she’s a model

nEO_IMG_PC142944 She took this shot for me in return.

Windmills are one the the most significent spot in the Netherlands, after marijuana and red light district. I have no guts to try the first two, but was satisfied with the spetacular views of windmills.

nEO_IMG_PC143116 Amazing blue sky, thanks to my camera

We visited a small cheese house next to the windmill. It is also called “Catherine”, which made my new friend very happy. I’d like to buy some souvenior for friends but Catherine persuaded me not to but there “It’s a tourist place, price might be expensive.” What a rational girl.

nEO_IMG_PC143123 Nice cheese!

nEO_IMG_PC143130 Fed the goats.

after the windmills, we went back to city center. Then she asked me to transfer the files for her, I wondered if I should go back hotel that early. So she invited me to her hotel. FOR TRANFER THE PHOTOS. We were naive, okay? She gave me a olive soap in order to appreciate my contribution of taking photos. It was so nice of her!

Then we were heading for the Anne Frank Huis, I believe almost everyone who had been educated in any systems has had heard of this book “The Diary of Anne Frank” She’s a jew and her family were hidden in Amsterdam during the 2nd world war. Kept away from the SS. The museum is located the exact site where Anne and her family hide 50 years ago. It’s hard to imagine that living in such a small room and not allowed to make any sound after 8 o’clock, just in order to make a living. The war was crusial and the human were ugly, but when we looked back the history, we would know the direction fo the future. I felt quite tired after visiting the house, I had the same feeling after I visited Dachau concentration camp. I failed to explain to Catherine what is concentration camp.

Catherine and I separate after we went back to the city center, the DAM, she said that there’s a friend await in the hotel, so we said goodbye to each other. It was nice to have her accompannied with. I didn’t know where to go next, so that wandered on the street without any direction. Then I saw a museum looked funny, so that I paid 4 euros to enter.

nEO_IMG_PC143223 Sex museum

It was the first time to see so many manikins making love at the same time. But there’s not only sex but a wide range collection of sexuality in different culture. They introduce sex issue from the Roman empire to nowadays. I was impressed that back in the 18th century, the camera were rare and expensice, somebody even paid for shooting sex actions.

nEO_IMG_PC143215 Shooting calendar girl

There’s one scene caught my eyes, when a photographer shooting calendar girl, there’s a bottle of JACK DANIEL’S on the table. I laughed for a while, Jack Daniel’s is everywhere.

Then I went to the red-light disctrict, where people were forbidden to take photos. Or you will be punched by prostitudes or bodyguards. Urban legend said there was a Japanese guy took one photo of the district then a whore went out the window to the guy, kicked his balls and throwed the camera in the canal. The other version was that a guy from south America took one shot and argued with the whore, the woman was so mad that she use a knife to kill the man. This version is not that belivable, since there’s not more place to hide a knife from a whore, they barely wear clothes.

nEO_IMG_PC143228 Premire of a movie, LOFT

I felt that I must trained myself to walk in the night, so that I walked in the dark street by the canal and saw there’s something happened. A premire of a movie with annonymous local stars. That’s kind of bored, I’d rather shoot the stars by myself.

D1 Throwing everything away

12/13 Monday, Sunny
Lyon, Geneve, AmsterdamAmsterdam

I left Lyon this afternoon, 2pm, bus number 3, I guess that’s the last time. The administration office requires us to check out before leaving, so that I checked out at half pass one. The process was quick so that after 5 minutes later, I was sitting in my room, not exactly “my room” but an empty space with warm sunlight. It was too early to leave, so that I hang around le Galion, said goodbye to everyone. I missed Toby and Mathias in person but the time’s up so that I left. (Left a roll of toilet for Toby and a beer for Mathi in the kitchen.)

Sitting on the bus, I started to recall the days we had, and the people I met in this 3 monthes. The first day was tough, Alison and I walked all the way just tried to find the dormitory, which is hidden behind the woods. We met Nischint, our Indian roomie or kitchen mate, he was settled down and looked confident. We’ve heard there’s a Taiwanese girl from NTU, so that we went to carrefour together, Joey, a sweet girl became our close friend afterwards. Paul and Fookie were waiting for the bus and we bumped into them. Toby had problem with Internet connection at the first day he came, I fixed for him. Mathias came with Manuel, they stole a cart from Carrefour and hide that in the wood. Jose always played loud music with heavy base. And Angela from Italy did not often show up in the kitchen. Shy Indian girl always cooked her food by herself, but she always sat at the front roll of the classroom. Shy Spanish-speaking dude locked his door everytime he went out, even grab a cup of milk in the kitchen. These memory flash through my mind vividly, I can even recall the dialogue.

nEO_IMG_PC102709 Right before Mexican party

Then I arrived Part-Dieu, the metro system was still stink and litter all time. I used to regard Lyon as my second hometown, and then I realized that I was about to leaving and might never coming back again. I was really upset. Nevertheless, that’s what we called life. I arrived Geneve for transfering flight to Amsterdam, my first destination of the tour, I named it “Across the borders”

By today til 17 of January, I will begin my big tour around Europe, I will visit so many cities and different countries in a month. It waill be a milestone in my life since most of the time I will have to handle all the situation, make decisions by myself. Besides, I loose my faith to people after I’ve got robbed on the street. Became afraid to talk or to meet strangers that I used to be. I need to move on, across the border of my mind, start to trust people again.

nEO_IMG_PC132851 First stop, Geneve

The weight limitation of easyJet is 20 kilos, and sadly I’ve packed almost 30 kilos in my luggage. One kilo of excess will cost me 20 CHF as fine. So that I started to throw things in front of the check-in counter. I had no choice but throwing clothes I like a lot, contract with Societe Generale, and my favorite boots! (The ones I wore on the hammered night in San Sebastian, Mathi cleaned those for me) I was extremely depressed after I realize how much I like the boots, it’s not warm enough to talk in the snow but I wore the boots to many places in my life, I missed the boots. Yes, I’ve thrown 8 kilos of things, really sad :(

Throwing of the boots made me think of that I have to throwing away things that prevent me from improving myself. Sometimes I was locked in my own comfort zone and easily satisfied. Satisfied with people I met before so that not willing to meet more friends, rather staying at home then see more around the world. Those bad habbits became obstacles in my path of becoming a better man. It is not to day that old friends are not important, I remembered that I wrote to somebody that: Life has highs and lows and we’re lucky to have friends to support us all the time. The truth is that friends can’t always around your side, but only the true friends will be there anytime you need them. That’s the most precious thing.

nEO_IMG_PC132867 Hotel on a boathouse, Vita Nova

I arrived Amsterdam city in the night. Everytime strangers walked close to me I got scared, as if they wanted to do something to me. But got lose in the train station force me to talk to pass-by. It says that people in the Netherlands are friendly, it was true. I am glad that I choose this friendly city as my first stop.

nEO_IMG_PC142874 AIESEC band, from Mexico

After I took off the band that Erika gave me today, I fell asleep.
